Sony Rialto 2 Camera Extension, with Arri Cage
The Sony Rialto 2 (officially the VENICE Extension System 2, model CBK-3620XS) is a specialized accessory for the cinema-focused Sony VENICE 2 camera system. Its purpose is to physically separate the camera's image sensor and lens mount from the main camera body, connecting them with a high-bandwidth cable. This dramatically reduces the size and weight of the camera head while preserving full image quality.
How it works
Normally, a VENICE camera's sensor, lens mount, recording system, and electronics are all in one body. With the Rialto 2:
- The sensor block and PL lens mount become a compact "camera head."
- The main camera body can be placed several meters away.
- A tether cable carries power, control, and uncompressed image data between the two.
Sony offers cable lengths of approximately 3 m (9.8 ft) and 12 m (39 ft), a significant increase over the original Rialto system.
Why cinematographers use it
The Rialto 2 is designed for shots that would be difficult or impossible with a full-size cinema camera:
- Inside race cars or aircraft cockpits
- Tight vehicle interiors
- Lightweight gimbal setups
- Cranes and remote heads
- Helicopter and underwater housings
- POV and specialty rigs
- Stereoscopic/3D camera configurations
Because only the sensor block and lens are on the moving rig, operators can achieve shots with much less weight and bulk than a standard VENICE package.
