The Sony Rialto 2 (officially the VENICE Extension System 2, model CBK-3620XS) is a specialized accessory for the cinema-focused Sony VENICE 2 camera system. Its purpose is to physically separate the camera's image sensor and lens mount from the main camera body, connecting them with a high-bandwidth cable. This dramatically reduces the size and weight of the camera head while preserving full image quality.

How it works

Normally, a VENICE camera's sensor, lens mount, recording system, and electronics are all in one body. With the Rialto 2:

  • The sensor block and PL lens mount become a compact "camera head."
  • The main camera body can be placed several meters away.
  • A tether cable carries power, control, and uncompressed image data between the two.

Sony offers cable lengths of approximately 3 m (9.8 ft) and 12 m (39 ft), a significant increase over the original Rialto system.

Why cinematographers use it

The Rialto 2 is designed for shots that would be difficult or impossible with a full-size cinema camera:

  • Inside race cars or aircraft cockpits
  • Tight vehicle interiors
  • Lightweight gimbal setups
  • Cranes and remote heads
  • Helicopter and underwater housings
  • POV and specialty rigs
  • Stereoscopic/3D camera configurations

Because only the sensor block and lens are on the moving rig, operators can achieve shots with much less weight and bulk than a standard VENICE package.

Key improvements over the original Rialto

The Rialto 2 introduced several upgrades:

Feature Original Rialto Rialto 2
Maximum extension ~18 ft / 5.5 m ~39 ft / 12 m
VENICE 2 compatibility No Yes
Built-in gyro metadata No Yes
Assignable buttons on camera head Limited Multiple buttons
Higher-bandwidth connection Earlier design Improved system

Gyro metadata

One of the most useful additions is an integrated gyro sensor in the camera head. It records tilt and roll information as metadata, helping VFX and post-production teams stabilize shots or integrate CGI more accurately.

Compatibility

Rialto 2 works with:

  • Sony VENICE
  • Sony VENICE 2 6K
  • Sony VENICE 2 8K

Firmware updates are required on the camera body.

Real-world use

The Rialto concept became famous because it enabled shots in extremely confined spaces. Cinematographers have used Rialto systems for cockpit shots, vehicle interiors, and action-camera-style placements that would be impractical with a full-size cinema body. Industry discussions often cite it as one of the unique advantages of the VENICE platform.

Bottom line

The Rialto 2 isn't a camera itself—it's a modular extension system for the VENICE family. Its main benefit is that it gives filmmakers the image quality of a high-end VENICE cinema camera while turning the sensor and lens into a compact remote camera head that can fit where traditional cinema cameras cannot. It has become a popular tool for high-end feature films, commercials, vehicle work, and VFX-heavy productions.
